Locust Grove Nature Center‘s camps are designed to fit a parent’s busy schedule and keep a camper excited about being outside all summer long.  All camps include Naturalist-lead activities, hikes, crafts, and games designed to inspire and foster a love for nature.  Register for up to six weeks of concurrent camp sessions for children entering grades 1-3 and/or grades 4-6.  Camp sessions run Monday through Friday from 9 – 3:30, and extended care in the afternoon is available for an additional fee.

Locust Grove Nature Center believes in sharing a passion for the natural world with others and modeling that passion through respect for all living things.  Our camps are well known for high quality nature education delivered by professional naturalists.

June 25--June 29: Extreme Nature Camp
Prepare to be amazed by the mind-boggling things animals (and even plants) can do. Learn about extreme adaptations for survival, and find out which animals are record-breakers for being the biggest, smallest, fastest, and most dangerous. Are you stronger than an ant? Can you leap as far as a frog? You might be surprised! Join the active fun as we try to match the awesome abilities of our animal friends, create crazy crafts and hold an animal version of the Olympics.

July 2--July 6: Dinosaurs Rock! (does not meet Weds., July 4)
Step back 65 million years as we get up-close to the fossils of some of the most fascinating animals that ever lived! Have you ever seen the braincase of a T-Rex? How about a tooth or claw of one of the hunting raptors? We will hunt for 'dinosaur' eggs, make fossils, go on an excavation and much, much more. When you are done with camp you will see why dinosaurs ROCK!

July 2--July 6: Nature Tykes (does not meet Weds., July 4)
This half-day camp is just right for preschool explorers! We'll discover the life story of trees, follow water to see where it goes, dig into soil to discover what worms are up to, survey an amazing array of bugs, and seek out our wild neighbors' secrets.

July 9--July 13: Spineless Wonders
Celebrate insects and other invertebrates-from beetles and butterflies to snails and centipedes! We'll use nets to capture and release bugs in the meadow and aquatic critters in the stream, and search for our spineless friends in the woods. Enjoy five days of buggy bliss as we come to understand the importance of insects through outdoor exploration, crafts and games.

July 16--July 20: Nature Film School
How do nature documentaries get made? Do animals show up on cue? How does a filmmaker decide what to document, and why? Campers will learn from experts how to design and document natural subjects and produce a film to screen for friends and family.

July 23--July 27: Living on the Land
Discover how to live on the land in an earth-friendly way! We'll learn about the original 'eco-friendly' dwellers, find out how animals get the food, water and shelter they need in local habitats, explore amazing animal homes, and even try our hand at 'animal architecture.' We'll also practice skills that Native Americans and pioneers used every day as they made their homes on the land.

July 30--August 3: Wild in the Woods
Come to a camp where it's okay to act like wild animals! We'll prowl, growl, swim and slither to learn about the lives of our wild neighbors. With a focus on native wildlife, we'll explore why animals do what they do and where in the forest they might be found.

August 6--10: Bookworms!
Let your imagination run wild in this camp for book lovers (and anyone who enjoys a good story). We'll share stories from our favorite animal characters, and let their adventures inspire our activities. Learn about the real animals behind the story, separate animal fact from fiction, and discover what makes animals appealing as characters. Get creative as you bring your own animal characters to life through story-telling, crafts, art, poetry, puppetry-or any other way you'd like to express yourself!
