Lake Needwood Closed for Dredging

March 22, 2011: Lake Needwood is in the middle of major renovations. In order to clear out the sediment that has been deposited over the years from Rock Creek, the 75-acre lake will be dredged, and then refilled. This major project will have a number of positive effects, including:

  • Increase the depth of the water to make for better boating, fishing and fun
  • Help improve the water quality of the lake and decrease algal blooms

bulldozer dredges Lake NeedwoodThe dredging project will continue through the summer of 2011.
Until dredging is completed and the lake is refilled...

  • Lake Needwood will be closed to boating
  • Lake Needwood Boats will be closed
  • No mooring passes, seasonal or daily boating permits will be sold
  • No Needwood Queen pontoon boat tours will run

You'll still be able to access the picnic areas and playgrounds near the lake.

While Lake Needwood is being renovated, we hope you'll visit Little Seneca Lake and Black Hill Boats in Boyds, Maryland . Kayaks (single and double), rowboats and canoes are available to rent at the boathouse there. Little Seneca Lake is approximately 15 miles northwest of Lake Needwood, in Boyds, Maryland.

Please check back throughout the spring for updates and more information.
